Modern technology both thrills and scares me in unequal measures depending on the day. I was speaking to a patient this week who reminded me of the marvels of modern day dental implants and just how far restorative dentistry has come.
Somewhere with the daily exposure to dental implants, I had forgotten the magic they can represent. As said patient ooo’ed and ahhh’ed whilst I described restoring her mouth with these magical dental tools, something inside me awakened.
From a scientific view point, ‘dental implants are metal posts or frames that are surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath your gums. Once in place, they allow your dentist to mount replacement teeth onto them’.
From an emotional prospective, we basically reconstruct teeth for people who have lost them through disease, neglect, perhaps a traffic accident, or even illness. How amazing that we have the knowledge and ability to do this. To repair a smile, restore confidence and function and perform life changing treatment should never be taken for granted.
So today I’m readdressing my outlook. Teeth whitening is no longer just teeth whitening, from today it is brightening someone’s smile and future! Invisalign isn’t just teeth straightening, it’s a great way to help someone be the best and most confident version of themselves. And we are no longer just dentists, we are smile designers, changing the world one smile at a time.
Sometimes it takes a moment, or a patient, (or often for me, it’s my toddler) to help us recognise the wonders that exist in our apparently mundane lives. It’s too easy to forget and take for granted the many advancements that only a century ago would have been deemed sorcery!
Let’s all try and take more of these moments to see the magic, and just as Louis Armstrong sang, appreciate what a wonderful world we live in.
